Most people have touched on the obvious stuff, so I’ll stick with the most glaring objection I haven’t seen mentioned yet.

It’s pretty outdated to say “the gays and lesbians.” Gay doesn’t mean men liking men, it’s supposed to mean being attracted to your sex, err, gender. Whatever. Those are the only two answers listed that both identify orientation AND gender. For example, selecting “straight” just means you like the opposite sex; there is no way to identify if the submitter was man or woman.

Another point: queer was supposed to encompass the sort of not so rigid sexual attraction identity. Queer, though flimsy in application and ever evolving in meaning, IS what “other” means. Undefined. Not absolute. It can mean asexual or chubby chaser. It can mean mean pre-op preference, or dragoning a GTO.

Yup. On a related note, we really need a word for “attracted to men” and “attracted to women.” Maybe I’m the only one, but it feels awkward when someone says something like, “How does he look, ladies?” ignoring the fact that not every woman cares and a good chunk of the men do.

This fails to cover any fraction of how to describe me. I have an affectional orientation (pan, sapio) and sexual orientation (asexual).

For pragmatic reasons, I try to appear cis socially, but I apparently come off as a closeted gay man to people that aren’t cis.

Mine is simple in comparison to my girlfriend’s. She just calls herself queer for simplicity, but she has identified as lesbian in the past.
